Klaus has now started barking on his walks. It's not an angry bark, it's more of a "Don't worry guys, I'll protect you from the Evil 10 year old girls on the pink bikes........BARKBARKBARKBARKBARKBARKBARKBARK..............BARKBARKBARKBARKBARKBARKBARKBARKBARKBARKBARKBARK!"

Here's the weird thing. Let's say we're walking down the sidewalk and a couple other people are heading towards us. He doesn't bark on the approach, he seems to want to bark at them after they walk by! Almost as if he's mad that they didn't stop and pay attention to him.

He's still a puppy so I'm assuming that this is another phase of his growing up. I just thought I'd check with some of you and see if any of you have experienced this.

sounds like brewster! and his bark is a loud one too! and he has to scratch up grass with his hind legs and it flings on you if he is on a short leash. i fuss him when he starts his barking so he doesn't do it a whole lot with me but my son and his girlfriend let it go on and on. i am afraid it is habit now. i think she kinda likes it because they live in an apartment complex and she feels safe when she has to walk him at night because everyone knows brewster the barker. they give him a wide berth too. if they only knew, that one's bark is much worse than his bite, lol.

Wait....what? I schnauzer that barks? Never heard of such a thing! Yes, I think it is pretty common. Just let him know that you are in charge and ok and I always try to treat when they stop barking when I tell them too. My two are very treat motivated. So positive re-enforcement is always a good thing when they do what they are told. I usually calm them down and tell them "no bark" and then treat when they don't bark. They still have their episodes though. But we are still trying hard. lol

Yeah, I figured it was just a combination of Breed characteristic and his 2 "special accessories" dropping.

He did do pretty well at a meeting with one of the neighbors dogs though. About a week ago he met the boxer next door. Within 10 seconds Klaus had the boxer dominated to the point that the boxer pee'd right on the driveway and rolled over onto his back. 8-O He did the same exact thing with an Airedale terrier on memorial day weekend. I was astonished.

Is this also a normal trait for the MS?

Picking up on the "pink bikes" bark:
Our Connie will bark at people on the other side of the door/fence/gate, but it's only a veneer. She wants to be friends with everybody. Once I give an assurance to the 3rd party, all is well and Connie proves my point.
But that assurance sounds sooo cliche!

Special accessories, lol! My guys bark on approach, as people pass by and long after they're gone. They also think they are a much larger dog than they are. My last ms would take on any big dog he could find.

Try getting his attention on you as your walking so he is thinking about you not the distraction even if you have to stand still while the distraction passes If he looks at you not whats going by praise him quietly dont excite him .With regard to meeting other dogs and dominating them ,I would not let any dog do this let alone a young dog some people will say he is only playing but I think pups should know some manners when greeting other dogs as things can quickly turn into a bad situation if he meets the wrong dog and does this .Oh little boys just wait till his a teenager

Very good advice, Kathy. With my last ms we worked on his "big dog problem" in training class. He got pretty good at ignoring them but we always had to watch him. He didn't mind other smaller dogs, just the big ones.

Yeah, so far it's only been much bigger dogs that he's tried to dominate. He actually plays pretty well with other dogs his size. We're keeping a close eye on him when he's around big dogs.

I hear you. It's bad when they both are barking. Dyson is very reactive to Kirby so if Kirbs sees something and growls then Dyson is off on a bark-fest. Kirby joins in of course. They have a single track mind when this happens and have to be picked up to get them to stop. The trainer suggested walking them separately and it really makes a huge difference.

Now here is a reason for me to not get a second dog too early. thanks for the hint!
My Schu 6 months and started barking loud and clear about 4 weeks ago, he even barks at me when I come home and then in human terms is very 'embarrassed' that this happened.

I distract him and play, when I know the neighbours come home.
Sometimes he barks at passers-by, sometimes he doesn't. And YES -they have a good voice.
Schu has an outside enclosure and when he starts barking in there, when I am next to him, I get a real fright.

I am working forwards and backwards with the 6-month old dog.
I am today starting to lock him in his (big) crate for the first two hours of sleep.

He has become less controllable in the last two weeks despite diligent training and work with him. He seems to become stronger/wilder.... and a more difficult to manage dog. When I take him out of the crate (in the car), he nearly flies over my shoulder and scratches me in the process.
So: I am locking him up in his crate in the evening for two hours.
He is only a puppy! Let's see what that does.

Sounds to me like Schu needs to run and get rid of all that energy. He has a ton of it bottled up...they all do...but epecially the puppies. A long walk would work as well. What does he weigh now?

Yep, I have a barker too  If she is off lead and someone walks past and she wags and they ignore her, it naffs her right off and she will bark her bonce off whilst they walk away, she has even trotted behind them at times barking. On the lead, you can usually tell as they mature what their triggers are, Sparkle will get tense and pull forward huffing and puffing leading up to a bark so I tell her quiet and as we pass (a person this is) I tell her quiet, she doesnt bark, she gets a treat. Now with regards to another dog, I make her sit as the dog passes, she sits and her bottom does not move, she gets a treat. Now she is 2 in October so it has taken a fair while for the penny to drop, that to get a treat, you behave nicely. So it will come, hes just a baby, but start as you mean to go on and he will get it :)

Barker Parker...says it all! Actually, he didn't bark at first, he grew into his nickname. He barks at any animals on the TV, kids outside playing and other dogs (which is new). Sully rarely barks, same with Rook. Speaking of barking, do any of yours "Roooo?" (pronounced like shoe) It doesn't sound like a bark, more like a "rooooo rooooo" Thats how Rook barks!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but Lola doesn't bark at all. I've no idea why not. She sometimes makes a rather woeful attempt, but it sounds more like a seagull being strangled than a bark. Actually, she did once bark, but it frightened her so much that she's never done it again!

Kirby is a barker, very high and ear piercing. Dyson is a roooo-er. Very funny to listen to. He's bark impaired.

Lucy actually has a very cute adorable bark...can't even describe it but it's not a roo and not an ear piercing yip. But she rarely barks....never at another dog or person..mostly when someone knocks on the door... And last night when Katelyn was playing rather crazy with her...in the house...yeah...to hot to do it outside and Lucy is in energy overload these days.

This is funny, how all our dogs are different!!! Sully barks in between a roo and high pitch, but doesn't bark that often. Barker Parker is high pitched, Rook Roo's!
